Tell Me About Yourself

One of the things I like to do in my class is pairwork exercises. I usually will have the students partner up with a different classmate every day. It’s a natural and fun way for them to get to know one another while learning.

In the beginning of the year, the goal for them was simple. They just needed to ask each other questions from their papers and read off the responses. Changing partners, adding an element of speed, and daily repetition helped them to absorb the target material.

My 5 th /6 th -graders, featured in this edition of the English Department homepage, have learned to respond to 26 unique questions. Most of the students can do all 26 without looking at native speed. It’s very impressive, and I am quite proud of them. I encourage parents,  who are also trying to learn English,  to practice speaking with their sons or daughters whenever possible. It would be a fun bonding experience for all. (Erik Nelson)
